Thyroidectomy (Thyroid Removal)

A thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or both lobes of the thyroid gland in cats who have been diagnosed hyperthyroid. The procedure does not require an over-night stay.

Why are Cats Hyperthyroid?

No specific mechanism has been found as to why cats become hyperthyroid. The disease typically affects cats of middle or advanced age; 12 years and older. Symptoms include increased appetite, weight loss, increased thirst, increased urination, periodic vomiting or diarrhea, and unkempt hair coat.

How is Hyperthyroidism Diagnosed?

The surgery typically does not require an extensive recovery period. If the pet goes outdoors, the cat must be kept indoors for about 3 days. Your pet’s appetite and activity level should return to normal within 24 hours post surgery.

Alternative Surgical Options?

There are alternatives to surgically removing the thyroid gland/s. Treatments include the use of radioactive iodine, oral medication, or a prescription diet (Prescription Diet y/d). Your veterinarian will discuss the options in more detail. Please ask for more information if needed.
