Surgery Procedures

On the Morning of Surgery

Please have your pet to our hospital between 7:00-8:00 am. After you arrive, you can expect to spend 15-20 minutes with a technician. This time is for you to discuss any issues/questions about the procedure with our surgery technician, sign all appropriate forms, as well as go over any additional health services your pet may need while here.

Please note, a pre-anesthetic blood profile may be required for your pet prior to the surgical procedure. This profile is required for all pets over 7 years of age, but it is highly recommended for all pets. The pre-anesthetic blood profile gives us a snapshot of your pet’s organ functions, infection (if present), anemia, and overall health. The cost of this profile is $59.

Make sure you inform the technician of any signs of illness, as well as any past problems that you may be aware of regarding past medications/surgeries.

Anesthetic Complication: It is always possible that any pet could have an adverse reaction following the administration of any medication/drug. Such cases are impossible to predict but, fortunately, they are very rare. We monitor our surgical patients very closely to ensure if a complication arises, we can catch it early and treat it appropriately.

On Your Pet’s Surgery Day

All operations that involve general anesthesia are considered major operations. After your pet is admitted into the clinic for the surgery, the surgeon will perform his/her initial exam and run all necessary pre-anesthetic testing. Please note: there are several surgeries scheduled on any given day, and the actual timing of your pet’s procedure will be determined based on the doctor’s assessment of not only your pet’s needs, but also the needs of the other pets to have surgery that day.

Please ensure that you are available at the emergency number referenced on the surgery form, as we may need to reach you for questions or during an emergency. Failure to be reached at this number may result in postponement of the surgery. Once your pet is in recovery, we will call to let you know about the surgery and also give you a time frame for discharging your pet. Typically, we start releasing surgery patients after 3pm.

When you arrive to take your pet home, the receptionist will take care of financial obligations with you first, and then you will be escorted to an exam room. At this time, a technician will cover all surgical discharge instructions, medications, and WHAT TO DO NOW information. This is also when we can answer any questions you may have about the surgery or your pet’s home care. If you do not understand ANY of the information, please do not hesitate to ask for more information. We want you to have a full understanding of your pet’s needs before you leave.

We are fully aware that surgery day can be an anxious time, so please know that we are available at any time to answer any and all questions regarding your pet’s procedure (before OR after).
